Competition Dance
Dream Dance Conservatory has a growing program for dancers ages 4-18 years who desire to be in the competitive dance world. Dream Dance Conservatory has been competing since we opened in 2013 and has worked hard to develop technical and artistic dancers that compete in the very competitive DFW area. We currently have over a hundred kids that compete that make teams that compete at various levels at Regional and National competitions each season. We have attended several regional and national competitions in the last several years. We have won several first-, second-, and third-place overall awards competing against some of the most competitive studios in the DFW area and nearby surrounding cities for our regional competitions. We have won a variety of elite, platinum, double platinum, and titanium adjudications, as well as, judges choice awards and choreography awards. We have won specialty awards for costuming, creativity, stage showmanship, astonishing technique awards, apogee awards, and top studio awards for the combined highest score of all the routines in the entire competition. At our recent nationals in the summer of 2022, we were awarded a very elite studio award. We received the Ultim 8 Top Studio award. This award was an honor as our studio was the award-winning studio for our entire division at the Nationals Championship.
Dream Dance Conservatory has eight competitive teams, six Hip-hop teams, and three tap teams for our 2023-2024 season. We divide our teams based on age, skill set, and time commitments. We do 3-4 regional competitions (in the DFW metroplex) every year and Nationals every other summer; our students also have the opportunity to participate in conventions. All of our companies have a two-night requirement for classes and rehearsals, except our Hip-hop, tap, or Drill team which only requires one night a week. Several kids also choose to do privates for technical improvement if they do a solo, duet, or trio. It varies each year what each group competes in, but we compete in all styles of dance including jazz, musical theatre, open, contemporary, modern, and lyrical for teams. If students choose to compete in Hip-Hop or Tap only, they can audition for those teams or add those styles of dance as additional routines to compete in. Our companies do all their routines at the end of the year recital in June, along with additional recital routines. Some of our classes throughout the year stay as technique-only classes so we can continue to grow as dancers.
Auditions for dance companies are held every late spring or summer for the upcoming season. We have an additional summer date scheduled if needed for a private audition or in-class audition for anyone who missed our first round of auditions. Our dance season starts every August and goes through June. We do require company kids to train in the summer. A required 3-6 day intensive is at the end of July- early August to learn all the choreography for the upcoming season.
Dream Dance Conservatory does a lot of its choreography for competitions in-house from our very own highly accredited staff, however, we do bring in guest choreographers some years to set one or two of the pieces. This is a fun exciting time for our students to learn different styles of technique from other wonderful and talented choreographers.
Our company moms are fantastic and help make sure that our DREAM DANCERS stay connected outside the studio! We have a Social Committee President who gets a mom representative from each one of our competitive teams. They meet at the beginning of the season and come up with some "fun outside the studio socials" for our kids to engage outside of the dance studio. A few of the socials we have done in the past are: Glow pizza and dance party, big sis/ little sis or big brother/ little brother are revealed in a fun creative way, Donuts/ Dads morning breakfast, pool parties for the whole family, a night at tumble/ trampoline park where kids can bounce and have fun, and painting canvas with mom/ daughter. These moms also work very hard to help make sure that our team fundraisers are productive and fruitful! We feel it is important to give our parents the tools they need to help with the financial responsibilities that come with a competitive dancer. Our Social Committee also coordinates the food trucks, selling of bows and car decals, and other ideas to make sure that some of the costs of these socials and goodie bags are covered! As a studio, there are a lot of Spirit nights with local restaurants that we can partner with the community to support our dancers.
Our company dancers are celebrated at the end of the season with a fun dance and awards banquet to honor the students with awards, a dinner, and of course dancing! The social committee plays a huge role in making this a special success. This last season was a country/ western theme where a western dance hall was rented with a DJ for dancing, eating, and our special awards ceremony. This special event is a great way to end the season with family and the Dream Dance community.
